Only 1,500 South-eastern Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos remain, and too much fire is a major threat. (c) Bob McPherson.
The recent fires in Australia aren't just destroying property - they are killing animals and destroying habitat. Parrots may be able to fly away from the fire itself, but they may starve to death if they have lost all sources of food. Wild birds sometimes have very specific diets. The Australian ABC station has a good video about the problem here. Glossy black cockatoos on Kangaroo Island eat food from a single kind of tree - and most of them were destroyed in the fires. Fires are major threat to wild life - see this excellent article.
My Australian pals tell me one of the best wildlife organizations there is called WIRES - New South Wales Wildlife Information, Rescue and Education Service. WIRES has set up an emergency fund to help with the urgent needs of burned and starving wild creatures, including birds and parrots. You can read about it here.
